Meon Valley University of the Third Age

The University of the Third Age is an international organisation. Meon Valley U3A membership requires no educational qualifications, just an interest in life long learning and enjoying leisure in retirement.

Dr. Denis May of Soberton Heath, the founder Chairman, first came across U3A in France, liked what he saw and brought the idea home with him.  Sixteen "academic" years have now passed since the Group was set up.   Membership, currently about 50, is drawn from the Meon Valley villages, North  Fareham,    Bishop's  Waltham   and   the   surrounding   areas.

Meetings. Each year has a theme to act as a study focus.  Group meetings are held twice monthly  at  2 pm  on  Tuesday  afternoons  from  September  to  April.   There is an input of speakers at university  and other levels, and membership participation.  Group visits have included museum  and  gallery  tours , and  environmental  outings. The venue for meetings  is  The Houghton Room,  the Community Centre,  Mill  Lane,    Wickham.

Currently there are two Reading Groups  which meet monthly in members' homes to discuss a book of their own choice.   A Creative Writing Group, for which there is a fee, was first set up in 2003.    For further details telephone (01489).892380.

A Music Appreciation  Group is  led by  Dr. Denis May and two meetings are planned at Soberton Heath in  2007/08.  More details are available on (01329) 833594
